Lancashire & Cheshire - September 2025

As soon as we knew that Rotherham Titans first game of the season would be away at Sale, we knew that would be making our annual trip over the hills for the game. But this time, as I had booked the Friday off, it made sense to stay over in the area to save the two trips.

So, a quick check on Booking. Com and I found a house to stay in Friday night, in Leigh. And as we had planned to go to RHS Bridgewater on the Friday it wasn't too far away.

We arrived at Bridgewater around lunchtime, and then tucked into a sandwich that we had picked up locally at the start of our journey. We knew the cafes there would be busy, so better to go prepared.

It was a lovely few hours there, although some of the summer plants were now past their best, there was plenty there to see. The two areas that stood out for us, were the avenues of sunflowers, and all the Hydrangeas that swamped an area towards the rear of the park. So many different varieties. After sitting down and having a drink, we finished off our visit and then headed to our home for the night, only stopping on route for our first ever visit to Nando's. Which, was edible but nothing to write home about.

The house we stayed in was spacious, clean, and had everything you could want. Apart from, a view as it was on a questionable estate with upturned shopping trolleys as part of the vista!

We didn't need to leave the house until 11am on the Saturday, however as we had a few hours to kill before the rugby, we headed to Dunham Massey, a lovely National Trust property only 20 minutes from Sale rugby club.

And what a place it was, we came away saying that it was near the top of our list of favourite National Trust properties. It had a bit of everything, great architecture, beautiful historic furnishings, a lake, great gardens, and what appeared to be a stunning parkland which we didn't have time to explore.

Around 1:30pm we decided to set off the Sale, as it's not the easiest place to park as you are relying on finding a space somewhere on the backstreets. After about 10 minutes driving around, we managed to find a space about 5 minutes away.

And the game itself, the Titans started off like a steam train, quickly building up a 29-0 lead. Sale through were not going to give up easily and fought back, and at one point it looked like they might catch up, but a couple more tries sealed the 43-28 victory.

The 2hr drive home was quite a steady one, which does make a change from the usual drive over the hills.
