County Championship Rugby - May 2025

Having no rugby to watch for a few weeks, since the Titans finished their season, it was great to have the county championship start.

The first game was against Somerset and was played at Hull Ionians on the 24th May. It's only around an hour's drive for us to get there, and we arrived a little early to watch the second half of the U20's game, where the Yorkshire lads won.

Prior to the main game, we sat on a bench and enjoyed a packed lunch, topped off with some strawberries, very civilised. The main game was soon upon us, and the team was made up predominantly of National 2 players, with three from our team, Rotherham Titans, who are a National 1 team.

It was a comfortable win, 66-14, with Somerset only getting a couple of late tries when Yorkshire had already changed much of the team. Now on to next week, a decider away to our old rivals Lancashire.

The game was played at Fylde RFC, so we decided to head over a little early to spend some time next to the sea at Lytham. It's a drive of two and a half hours, so not on the doorstep, but a steady drive over. Again, we took a packed lunch, which we enjoyed looking out over a lake at Lytham St. Annes.

There was a good crowd at the game, which was expected when the winner would go on to Twickenham to play Kent. It was a hard tussle, but Yorkshire ran out 36-22 winners, so of course we were really pleased. And as a bonus, there was an ice-cream van in the car park for a celebratory ice-cream.

All in all, a lovely day out.
