Warm Walk - 12th May 2024

Off out for a walk in the sunshine today, with my old mate Darrell. Just us, as the other folks were all busy.

It has been a very dry and quite warm week, which of course is unusual based on the winter and early Spring which has been very wet. In fact, the warm weather was one of the reasons we came back from Wales a day early.

But as we were walking from 8:30am, we would be done by late morning so would miss the hottest part of the day. Plus, we had an 8-mile route planned and half of it was in the shade which would help.

We met in Hathersage, and it was busier than expected. It's never a quiet place, but even the main car park was packed today, so I ended up on a road on the outskirts of the village. That said, near where I parked was the start of the route so I can't complain.

We picked up the path that followed the River Derwent, a steady start to the walk as it took us through pastures, with sheep dotted around the fields, and the sound of the bubbling river always in earshot. Clearly, the sheep were used to people as unlike most sheep, they didn't run away as we came close.

The route then took us up through Grindleford, and then to the slog uphill through Padley Gorge; One of the most enchanting areas in the Peak District. We cut across near Bolehill Quarry, which provided a lot of the stone that built the dams in the nearby reservoirs, and then followed the road back down into the village.

And of course, we had to drop into Cintra's for a bite to eat, but being a good lad, just scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast for me today. I arrived home at about 1:30pm, and then time to chill. Well as much as you can when sitting down is an issue due to your medical issue!
