Shatton Moor - 20th May 2023

Well that didn't turn out as expected!

Today there were four of us available to walk, myself, Darrell, Tony and Stuart, so I picked a route that we last did when it was raining cats and dogs all walk, so was cut short.

We met in the small hamlet of Shatton between Hathersage and Castleton. You always need to get there early to get a parking space just over the bridge from the main road. And the weather was glorious, a peaceful walk was expected to be ahead of us. And it was for the first half an hour or so, just until we picked up the path uphill at Brough.

Then we noticed people coming towards us, and then more people. And to cut a long story short, we walked around 7 miles and must have been passed by about a thousand people; no exaggeration.

Clearly, there was a charity run/walk taking place, so we spent most of the 3hrs just moving out of the way of people. We all still enjoyed the walk as the conditions were perfect, but it did take away from it a little.

It's a great route, with plenty of uphill to get you breathing heavily, and when you are walking along the path called Shatton Lane, the views over the valley are beautiful.

The last section takes you along the River Derwent as it winds its way through the valley, with buttercup-covered fields to the left as you take the path.

So around 3hrs in total, not as expected but enjoyable.
