I had booked Monday off work, not for any particular reason, just because I had a spare day to take before the end of our 'leave year'. So we wondered what we could do on the day.
Of course, it started with thinking about a day trip to the coast, then Donna suggested that we could go overnight Sunday to save me having to drive there and back on the same day; I do yet a tad tired these days you know. Then to cut a long story short, we decided to make it a long weekend, Friday to Monday in a place we had never been to before. We headed west, over to Southport.
We arrived around 6pm on Friday night, the traffic hadn't been great on the way across, and the place Donna had found was stunning. A lovely new 2-bed house that had just come onto the holiday rental market. The weekend wouldn't be a particularly busy one, the intention was in the main to relax away from home where the temptation to do jobs around the house would have been too much.
On Saturday morning we headed around 20 miles down the coast, to Crosby Beach to see Another Place by Antony Gormley - 100 statues erected on the beach over a 2 or 3-mile stretch of sand. A very famous and popular art attraction on the west coast. It was definitely worth the drive, seeing the statues across the sands, those nearer the dunes with only the tops of their bodies above the level of the beach, and those stood further out near the low tide, kept above the level of the sands due to the constant washing over by the tides.
With all of the cranes and industry in the distance, it provided a great backdrop showing the seafaring heritage of this part of the world. After stopping for an ice-cream, we headed back up the coast and back to the house.
Sunday would be another steady day, we left the house late morning and headed down into the town centre, parking between the shops and all the sea-from attractions in Southport. We spent a couple of hours looking around the Victorian arcades in the town, and brunched at the lovely Pavillion Cafe on Lord St.

Another hour or so was spent near the lakes and the esplanade, before the headed back to the outskirts of the town to our house for the weekend. And to say that a couple of days ago the weather forecasts were showing a wet weekend, we rarely even needed to wear a coat it was that springlike.
That said, the weather was rather different on Monday morning, but that didn't matter as we were heading the 3rs drive back home.
