Over the Border - 30th January 2023

A couple of weeks ago, Donna was browsing to find some new places to visit whilst we were up in Northumberland and came up with Dunbar and Eyemouth. Two places we had never visited before, and other than seeing the signs for Eyemouth when passing on the train or on route to Edinburgh, not really a place I had heard much of.

We left Beadnell a little before 10am, for the 50+ mile trip north to Dunbar, only around 20 miles from Edinburgh. And what a lovely harbour area it had, it was definitely worth the drive up the A1. There are two harbours there, the remains of an old castle, a rebuilt gun battery, and more information signs than you could imagine, all telling some really interesting stories about the local area.

The old harbour, Cromwell Harbour, was used around the time of Oliver Cromwell to get the landed gentry away from the area. And of course, Donna 'Ray Mears' Bott did as she always does, spots some wildlife, with a seal popping its head above the water. One of the signs informed us that there are three seals who tend to spend most of their time in and around the harbour. You could also get a decent view of Bass Rock from here, a place very well known if you are into bird watching.

After having our packed lunch in a lovely public garden there, we headed back south on the 20-mile journey to Eyemouth.

On arrival I wasn't that impressed, there didn't really appear to be much there to see. However, as soon as we rounded the corner and came across the harbour, my view changed. It's quite a large harbour with lots of different types of boats, and clearly, a few of them are well-used trawlers. Lots of fishermen around just catching up with each other, a real fishing industry feel.

We crossed to the other side of the long inlet and headed down to the sea front where there were some amazing rock formations, you could clearly see where the ground had been pushed up and bent into a 45-degree angle by the power of the earth. Really interesting if you like geology as we do. Whilst there we also had coffee and cake at a lovely little cafe called Rialto, very nice homemade cakes .

Now just the 45-minute or so drive back down to Beadnell, and time for jacket potatoes.
