Baslow - December 2022

The last couple of years we decided to stay in the Peak District after attending the SJP event at Chatsworth, we stayed in a cottage in Rowsley the first time, and then one in Baslow last year. So again this year we decided to do the same, staying again at Hall Cottage in Baslow. A lovely cosy cottage hidden away in the lanes of the village.

The event at Chatsworth was on the 14th, a Wednesday, and it went ahead as planned and it was good to catch up with old friends. We always have a free tour of the house before our pre-dinner drinks, and to be honest, we were a little disappointed with the Christmas decorations this year. That said, maybe it's a result of the current financial crisis when everyone is cutting back a little.

I was driving as it was my Duty Manager week, so we took the car to Chatsworth House and when we came back out at 11pm, it was -7c so as you can imagine, I had to scrape the ice off the windows, and we had to sit in the car for 10 minutes waiting for it to warm up. Thankfully Donna had put a fleece blanket in the car so we shared that for a while.

The following day we didn't have much planned, other than lunch at Charlie's in Baslow. After all, we had planned for a chilled week, and it worked well given that Donna had a bad chest and cough. We were down at Charlie's for 1:30pm, and the meal was lovely. The place was packed so you could tell that the food was well-liked in the local area.

On Friday we took advantage of the dry and crisp weather and went out for a walk, a steady one around the Chatsworth estate so that Donna could get some fresh air. It wasn't that busy, certainly less so than we expected, so it was a nice walk. When we arrived back in Baslow we went to the Cafe on the Green for a bite to eat. The food was good, but it was cold in there as there was no heating on, and it did smell a little, that sort of smell that rubs off on your clothing. A shame, but we probably wouldn't go back there.

The rest of Friday was just chilling out for the both of us, we were leaving the cottage fairly early in the morning as we needed to get back home to head down to White Post Farm near Mansfield, to meet up with Jake, Sophie and Olivia. A fun afternoon planned with Father Christmas.
