Just two of us again this week for a hike, myself and my good old mate Darrell. We originally arranged to meet at 8:30am but Darrell had something to do on the way so we agreed on 9am, and for the first time in quite a while, in the lovely, but popular, village of Castleton.
If I am being honest I wasn’t looking forward to the hike up the hill, lack of fitness and confidence were causing a tad anxiety. But, I know that I need to start getting some more exercise under the belt, so ‘no pain no gain’ and all that. It’s a steady climb up to the base of the steep section to the top of Mam Tor, but that was even taking it out of me today. Then that last section, only about 400m I would guess, but quite steep. By the time I arrived at the trig point my legs ached somewhat.

It had been a foggy drive over, but thankfully in the Hope Valley the cloud was scattered, so it didn’t envelope the Great Ridge, and it was interspersed with areas of clear blue sky. If it wasn’t for the strong wind on the tops, it would have felt more like a Spring day.
We didn’t go right to the end of the ridge, at Lose Hill, but instead went through Brocket Booth Plantation and then looped back down into the village. We had walked for 3hrs and covered close to 7 miles with a good amount of ascent, so a good morning’s exercise.
