Levens Hall - 8th May 2022

It's been quite a while since I posted on here, to be honest I haven't been out and about that much, and I have struggled to have any interest in much at all, never mind typing up a post about what I have been up to. Again, being honest I don't have much motivation at the moment to do so, but as we are on holiday I thought it was a good time to get back into it.

It is our third holiday of 2022, so we should consider ourselves fortunate as there will be many people who haven't had the luxury that myself and Donna have had in 2022. And this time it would be to a part of the world that we have never visited before. It's the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An area that traverses the boundaries of the north of Lancashire and the south of Cumbria. Just below the Lake District.

We travelled up to our cottage in Silverdale yesterday, a steady 3hr drive with a lunch stop at Hest Bank, a small village on the coast just north of Morecambe, with a very busy level crossing next to the beach.

So today was our first full day and we decided to head the 20 minutes or so to Levens Hall, a historic house a little north of where we were staying. It was a lovely sunny day, not too hot so we were happy to be outside in it. The house itself is still lived in, and the first part of it was built around 1250, although there have been many changes to it over the years.

You only get to look around a few rooms however there is plenty of interest, but it's the formal gardens that are most impressive. There are banks of topiary that make out all sort of different shapes, there are formal areas where later in the year blooms will abound, and also wild areas left for the insects and small mammals that enjoy the anonymity that it provides. The site is surrounded by a wider area of parkland, but we didn't venture out there today.

After a few hours we headed back to the cottage where we spent a few hours relaxing out in the sun, followed by a couple of hours on the coast early evening. Maybe not the most beautiful sea-front, and the sands of the Morecambe Bay are more mud than sand, but still an enjoyable little jaunt.
