New Year Walk - 1st January 2022

It's become a bit of a New Year tradition for me and Donna, in that we head out for a walk early on New Year's Day. And for the last few years, we have done the same route. So why change the habit of a, well not exactly a lifetime. And the reservoirs of Derwent and Howden would be our 5hr circular walk.

We were actually out a tad later than normal, so didn't start our walk until 8:10am. Still fairly early as the sun was only just rising, but surprisingly a few people around. That said, we still saw very few people on the first half of the walk which took us to the old bridge at Slippery Stones.

Thankfully the weather was much different from last year when the ground was covered in ice and some rain was making it treacherous to walk on. Much of today it was overcast, with the odd break in the cloud, but mild and no rain. So no complaints, other than maybe it was a little too mild for the 1st January - in fact, I believe we had record temperatures of around 15c. A cold crisp morning is always our preference this time of year.

Our 'lunch' stop was at the bench near the bridge mentioned earlier, homemade soup and crusty tiger bread. A lovely little stop with the noise of the stream rushing by.

The second half of the route was as expected, busier with walkers and cyclists. Even a couple about 4 miles from the nearest car-park, with a small dog and a doggy pushchair? Each to their own I suppose.

By the time we arrived back at the car it was 1:10pm and we had covered close to 12 miles, Donna's hips were aching a little, as were my ankles. But no pain no gain and all that. And boy was it busy back at Fairholmes car-park, cars parked up verges and on every bit of spare space, never mind the actual car-park itself being rammed.

And that's why we go our earlier...
