Glorious Day - 24th January 2022

We had considered heading down the Cinder Track to Robin Hoods Bay today, but as it would be low tide by the time we got there we decided to leave the walk until later in the week when the sands would be covered. I do love hunting in the rock pools there at low tide, but just fancied seeing it differently as it seems to be low tide almost every time we are there!

So instead, our usual walk up the coast to Sandsend, and in weather that was rather different to that forecast. The BBC had suggested a mix of cloud and breaks of sun throughout the day, when in fact from around 10 it was wall-to-wall sunshine without even a hint of a cloud.

The beach was very different to what we were used to, in place it almost looked like the sand had been scraped off the beach, leaving areas of rock and pebbles where usually there is a sheet of golden sand. It did make it a little interesting though as we both enjoy keeping our eyes peeled for coloured glass and interesting shaped and coloured pebbles. Nothing exciting was found though today.

Lunch was taken at the Sandside cafe, as usual, and the food never disappoints. Simple beans on toast for Donna and a cheese and onion panini for me. Followed by hot chocolate for the both of us.

We continued the walk down to Sandsend Ness, then turned and headed back towards Whitby. We didn't walk the beach though as to be honest my back was giving me some pain so we stuck with the road and then the paths on top of the cliff when we arrived back in the town.

Instead of heading straight back, we went down onto the west pier to take advantage of the gorgeous sunset, and of course the much lighter crowds you see on a winter weekday. By the time we arrived back we had been out for six and a half hours, and walked nearly 11 miles. Not a bead day at the coast.
