Now when I say an early start, I actually mean that we left at 8:20am, so not really that early. However, given that it's not sunrise until around 8am there's little point going out earlier.
The plan was to head the short distance to Saltwick Bay, famous for fossils and a shipwreck just off the shore. But, we did know that by the time it was light, the tide would be halfway back in so not that hopeful.

That said, we did still spend an hour there and just strolled around the beach and rocks, the first footsteps on the sand for today. At low tide there will be much more to see and do, so another time as it's not going away.
We then headed back into Whitby and parked up next to the Abbey. We didn't have any specific plans so just headed down through the old town, crossed the swing-bridge (which was just opening), and headed up onto the west cliff for a hot chocolate at Clara's, and gingerbread ones at that.

By now the sea was only about 30 minutes from being high tide, and we had planned to go down onto the west pier but instead decided to take the short hop up the coast to Sandsend. Where we had lunch and then a bit of a walk to watch the crashing waves before heading back. By the time we got back, we had surprisingly managed to walk 5.5 miles, not too bad considering that today wasn't a 'walking day'. Just time for a couple of hours chilling before we head out for our Italian meal.
