Times Gone By - 16th May 2021

Well yet again the weather forecast was off the mark. I looked at three apps this morning and they all showed showers in the morning and then a dry afternoon, so we stayed in the cottage all morning with plans to head out in the afternoon.

And of course, we didn't have any showers at all in the morning so assumed that we must be lucky with the rain clouds missing us out, but of course we were wrong and the forecasters were just out by a few hours. Yet again.

I quite fancied going somewhere that we had never been before, and having seen the South Gare peninsula on Landscape Artist of the Year a few years ago, with all it's industrial heritage it seemed like a great place to visit.

We left around 1pm and headed the one hour drive up the coast, pulling into South Gare around 2pm, just as the rain was starting. The area is a peninsula that was made up of reclaimed land many years ago, and there is so much there to see.

As you arrive at the peninsula the road is flanked on one side by an old industrial site which appears to have been a gas or oil refinery in days gone by, lots of old rusty buildings, pipework and funnels. As you pass by you then come to an old harbour with lots of homemade rickety cabins sat above the harbour, there is a large 'estate' made up of green fishing association huts over the other side of the road, a breakwater and lighthouse, and lovely sandy beaches backed by rolling sand dunes with kite surfers trawling up and down in the wind.

And as you look east from the beach there is a large offshore wind farm which we have only ever seen in the distance before when down in Saltburn. Then look the other way and more industry, and with the dark moody skies it provided a great backdrop.

But, most of the time it was raining, not heavily but just enough to be annoying when like me you are trying to take photos, constantly wiping the lens and filter. But to be honest, it could have been much worse and with how dark some of the clouds were you could actually consider us lucky.

We arrived back at the cottage around 6pm, time to cook pizzas for tea and then chill out after an interesting afternoon.
