A Holiday at Last - 17th April 2021

We shouldn't really complain as I appreciate that for some, holidays don't come along that often, so we should be thankful for what we have got. But when you are used to going on holiday for 5 to 6 weeks of the year, a break like this one of around 5 months seems such a long time. But hey, hopefully we are on the road away from lockdowns and travel restrictions now, at least I hope.

As soon as Boris announced that from April 12th people would be able to go on 'staycations' we looked to see what we could book. I had 3 days leave that I had carried over into this financial year, so we booked a week in Whitby. Not our usual location as that was unavailable, but Donna found a nice cottage on a small estate right out on the outskirts of Whitby. Right next to the viaduct over the River Esk, that carries the Cinder Track which takes you around 20 miles all the way to Scarborough.

Travel day is often a day when you can't quite work on what to do in the day, you really want to get to your destination and get unpacked but as most places don't allow new guests in until 4pm, what to do in the daytime? Especially at the moment when a lot of places still haven't yet opened.

So we booked for Castle Howard, the tickets are currently only £12.95 per adult as the house is closed for Covid, but with a large estate and lots to see there it's always a great place to spend a few hours. We restricted ourselves to an extent though, as some areas were packed with families so we kept well away.

Fortunately at around 12:30pm we received a call from the cottage owner telling us that it was ready early, so we finished our packed lunch and walked a little more then headed up the coast, and by around 4pm we had unpacked and were settled in.

We chilled for a couple of hours and had tea, then around 6:30pm we headed off down into Whitby, a 4 mile round trip to the pier but apart from one quite steep section, a steady walk.

It was a lovely sunset so I managed to grab a few photos, and whilst there we were surprised to see a seal just laid at the top of a slipway on the east pier. It didn't look injured in any way, and it could quite easily have walked back to the sea which was only about 20 feet away, so not sure why it was there. I tried to approach it, but the snarl and the teeth soon made me back off. Hopefully it was just there taking a break.

We arrived back at the cottage around 9pm, now time for some sleep.
