Grindleford Loop - 5th September 2020

Well today was my last hike before we go to Snowdon, so another trip over to the Peak District for a few hours.

Only Darrel out of the guys going to Snowdon was available, but Malcolm also came along. Unfortunately however Malc isn't free to head over to North Wales with us which is a shame as he wanted to come, and we would have loved it if he was able to. However he's unable to get anyone to look after his cats for a couple of nights, and as his cats are his family, I can understand where he is coming from.

We met at Grindleford Train Station at around 7:45am, and by 8am were on our way. It was a bonus this week as Darrell had decided the route, so no need for me to refer to OS Maps as the route was straightforward. More time for banter!

The first section was the steepest, up Padley Gorge until you exit the trees, then past Owler Tor, over the road and up to Mother Cap then Over Owler Tor, where we parked our backsides for 10 minutes, and just enjoyed the views. That said, the views were a little subdued as a result of the heavy grey cloud. But views nonetheless.

We continued across the fields and then up over Higger Tor which I believe is the highest point on Hathersage Moor and popular with people who are on a short walk from the main car-park next to the road. Thankfully that was all the uphill sections done, the rest of the way was in the main all downhill.

After traversing the brook at Upper Burbage Bridge we followed the popular path that is the Sheffield Country Walk, right down to the road where we crossed over and into the Longshawe Estate. We followed Burbage Brook for about half a mile and the rest of the route was going back down Padley Gorge to where we started from. A steady 8 miles or so with about 1,000ft of ascent, and walking for close to three and a half hours.
