I had been planning this walk for a few weeks, but it looked like there would only be myself and Malcolm as Darrell wasn't feeling well, and Nigel hadn't replied for a few days, and Colin said that he wouldn't be available. However in the end there was the four of us all arriving in the car park at Shillitto Woods around 8:15am.
Now for the last few days the weather forecast had been for a dry and cloudy day, then yesterday it changed to show a few spots of rain until around 9am, but in fact it was thick with fog and drizzly when we started our walk. And that wasn't to change as it was like that for much of the 9.5 miles we walked. And to add to the experience, although not really surprising given the rain we have had for the last few weeks, it was very muddy!
That said it was an enjoyable walk as we were in the fresh air which is a bonus, burning off a few calories which is always good, and the best of all was all of the schoolboy banter which flows when we are all together. I don't think any of us will ever act our ages no matter how old we get.
The walk itself saw us follow the stream just below Shillitto Woods, then go uphill to Big Moor which we would then travel around taking the route back along White Edge. Always worth looking out for Deer in this area and we were lucky enough to see a Stag and many of his harem. And oh boy was the ground wet and muddy, we all had sodden boots but I was wearing Sealskinz socks so I believe I was the only one with dry feet at the end of our four and a half hour walk. That said, my boots were soaked and requiring a wash and a couple of days in the airing cupboard.
And to say I ached in the afternoon would be an understatement, in fact all I wanted to do was sleep but I had to go to Waitrose to do the shopping and then pick Donna up from work so I would have to hold out until the evening...
