And on to Tuesday, and another day where our plans needed to fit around the forecast weather. From around 11:30am yesterday until around 7am this morning the heavens were constantly open, in fact during the night we had a period of thunder and lightning just to add some spice. So today, a clear morning and early afternoon was on the menu, then the rains expected to return mid-afternoon, so plans were afoot to get out for the first part of the day.
The door to the cottage was locked at 9am as we left the cottage, with the first port of call for the day Blackpool Sands, only about 20 minutes away. That said, the 20 minutes doesn't include the short wait for the ferry to get us across the water to Dartmouth before heading down the coast. I must admit it was quite exciting taking the car on ferry as it's not the sort of thing you do everyday, probably not so much so for locals that either have to cross on the ferry, or take a 50 mile round -trip to get to the same place!
Blackpool Sands is one of those places that will be packed to the rafters in the summer, a safe stretch of beach with lots of facilities for both sporty individuals and families alike. We were there over an hour, and to be honest it was hard work walking up and down the beach. Soft sand can be hard to walk on, but at least you can walk on the more dense sand next to the water. But with shingle, oh my god that is difficult to walk on.
We were really fortunate as just after we got back to the car the heavens opened; only for about 10 mins but it really hammered down. The drive to our next destination was about 20 minutes, but it required absolute focus as the lanes were only wide enough for one car, the hedges were tall, and the surface was slippy. Not the best driving conditions but we battled on and it wasn't long until we arrived at Rabbit Farm Bontanical Gardens.
Our arrival was smack on opening time, and the owner was on hand to show us to the start of the walk and tell us a little about the gardens. We were there for over 2hrs, lots of walking up and down the slopes of Strawberry Valley, a lovely couple of hours but as it was late September most of the flowers were long gone but still a good sprinkling to brighten up the walk.
After spending 15 minutes in the site garden centre where we purchased a couple of plants, we headed off back to the cottage for another relaxing afternoon and evening hiding away from the rains which arrived almost of queue.
