Today's agenda was centred around a drive over to Dartmoor, and then a small hike to see the quarry where Bear Grylls took England football manager Gareth Southgate as part of the outdoor adventure filmed for TV: Foggintor Quarry with it's slab sided walls.
The first part of the drive didn't turn out as planned, as after taking the ferry and heading out of the far side of Dartmouth, Google took us the most direct route which was more very narrow lanes with tall hedges each side blocking the view of any oncoming traffic. We didn't want this for most of the way so ended up doing a detour that probably added around 15 miles to our drive.
As we approached Princetown from where we would start our hike, just a few miles from the village we came upon a great little stop next to a raging River Dart. We ended up stopping there for an hour or so as we took photos of the angry waters and enjoyed an early lunch.
It was only another 10-15 minutes before we were parked up and ready so set off on the hike. Only a little over 4 miles, but as the weather wasn't that great it was enough. The walk took us across boggy paths, along an old abandoned railway line, through low cloud and of course the customary rain. And as a bonus we were lucky to come across some of the famous Dartmoor Ponies; in fact we were stood right by a couple of them as we passed by on the path.
Our next port of call would take us back across the south-east of the county and over to the beautiful harbour town of Brixham, with a detour along the way to Paignton as Donna had visited as a child so wondered if any of the place would bring back memories. Our visit to Brixham kept us entertained for nearly 2hrs. We had some of the best fish & chips that we've ever had, and enjoyed them sat looking out over the harbour. And the small town itself with it's coloured houses adorning the slopes above the harbour, and it's large and modern marina with green seas lapping up at the shore. A lovely place to visit. Now just the 15 minute drive back to the cottage, a tiring but enjoyable day had by all.
