A bit of a short day out today, planned though as the very hot weather means that we will be spending much of our break 'under cover' hiding away from the heat. That said, although still very warm the morning was expected to be a little overcast so we knew that we had a few hours before the clear blue skies arrived.
We are only 15 minutes or so from the Unesco World Heritage site of Derwent Mills, well that's 15 minutes from the top of the site as it's actually 15 miles long! The bit we headed for was just on the southern edge of the Matlock Bath, not Masson Mills which is now just a large shopping centre, but the adjoining Cromford Mills with all of it's history.
The whole heritage site to be honest has numerous Mills, plus many other buildings all scattered along the Derwent Valley; we however stuck with Cromford which is one of the most well known, and then took a 3.5 mile round-trip down Cromford Canal to the junction where train used to meet canal, and also took in the stunning working pumphouse. Unfortunately not open today as it houses a still fully working steam pump that takes water from the Derwent and feeds the canal.
There were many other places in the area to visit but by around 12'ish when we got back to Cromford Mills it was just too hot for us so we headed back to the cottage to spend the rest of the day relaxing within it's cool walls.
