Monks Dale - 22nd April 2019

As mentioned on my short blog entry a couple of days ago, I hadn't been able to take advantage of the weekend, however as my Duty Manager stint finished at 8am today it allowed me to take something out of the long weekend. That said, it was Donna who had reminded me that I would be 'free to roam' as it simply hadn't registered when I was considering my options a couple of weeks ago.

I had invited a few people who were regulars last year, however neither Mel or Dianne were available, and Colin dropped out the morning of the walk so just myself and Malcolm to venture into the hills. It's a very long time since the 5 of us managed to get out together.

Although it was a bit of a drive, I wanted to go somewhere new so we headed out to the bottom of Millers Dale, a few miles south of Tideswell and not far off the Monsal Trail. Ok the Monsal Trail is now new to us, but the route I had planned was. It would take us up through Monks Dale, then across to Wormhill Village before dropping back down into Chee Dale to pick up the last part of the busy Monsal, not the packed Trail but just below it and following the river.

It was a warm day, so not easy walking, and doubly so when you consider that walks are few and far between these days. However, not complaining as it always good to be out in the fresh air and having a good catch-up with Malc.

The walk up Monks Dale was tough going, to get into it we had to go up a steep incline and then back down one into the start of the Dale, and then the path itself was very rocky. And as I had decided to walk in hiking shoes today instead of boots, I kept going over on my ankles. Message to self.

So the overall distance walked wasn't that great, only about 6.5 miles but it was a challenge, and took us about 3.5hrs. It was about a 1.5hr drive back home for me inclusive of dropping Malc off back home. So just the trip back into Sheffield to collect Donna after work, and then time to put up my feet ready for heading back to work tomorrow.
