Misty Moor - 6th April 2019

After our last aborted trip out into the Peak District a couple of weeks ago where we sat on the bridge near Ladybower waiting for the sleet and snow to stop, it was fingers crossed that today would be an improvement. Yes the forecast wasn't for great weather, however no rain was forecast so a real plus there.

We left around 6:45am and headed to the car-park at Burbage Bridge, arriving a little after 7:30am as the roads were empty as you would expect at that time on a Sunday morning. And upon arrival the only other people were some 'outdoor types' parked next to us in a bright orange van with orange mountain bikes and orange flashes on their clothing; a bit of a pattern there?

Whilst dry, it was very foggy with the damp air that brings, and although it was a tad cool it certainly wasn't cold. The first mile and a half or so was along the Sheffield Country Walk as it runs parallel below Burbage Rocks which is well known locally for climbers who are in the early days of their pastime and just learning the ropes; literally.

This part of the walk was a little frustrating to say the least, as although there are clear signs asking people to keep their dogs on leads due to the pregnant livestock in the area, as often is the case people just tend to ignore the request. And we saw one dog chasing the sheep, another dog who had gone AWOL with the owners searching for it, and another lady jogger with her dog running alongside her. Even though Donna made comment to each of them relating to them ignoring the requests, it just fell on deaf ears. Given that recently Highland Cattle on Baslow Edge had to be slaughtered as a result of a dog owner complaining to the HSE when his dog scared the cattle and they reacted, this really is frustrating.

Anyway, thankfully the rest of the walk wasn't quite as frustrating and we weren't going to let it spoil our walk. After crossing the road we walked along the stream at the bottom of the Longshaw Estate before heading up and back across the road then through the Birch trees up to Mother Cap. The rest of the walk took us across Hathersage Moor in the mist enjoying the sights of the rock formations atop all of the peaks, with the added bonus of seeing fell runners who were taking part in round 2 of the Peak District Fell Racing series. Rather them than me!

As we arrived back to the car-park around 3hrs after setting off, it was certainly a little different to when we left, with a full car-park and people parking all over the verges. Given that it was a such a dismal day it was surprising how many people were out and about.

On the way back home we stopped off at Waitrose to do some shopping, then at B&Q for some plants before heading back home. And it wasn't home for a rest, well at least not for Donna as she spent about 4hrs in the garden although for me it was a little more relaxing as I spent most of my time editing photos.
