Whitby Wander - 17th November 2018

And on to our last holiday of 2018. It doesn't seem that long ago we were in Iceland, and in fact only being a month ago when we got back it isn't that long. So lets make the best of the break, 5 days on the Yorkshire Coast staying in The Lookout in Whitby, a place where we've stopped on a number of occasions before. We love it here as it's just far enough away from the hustle and bustle, yet overlooks the Esk River and the Marina in the town, with the sea on the horizon.

We arrived yesterday, and not a bad first evening as it's the start of their Christmas preparations and they have events all across the weekend, and last night there was a parade with coloured lanterns and a brass band, followed by Father Christmas coming to town. A really good family feel with lots of kids out and about.

So on to today, and a fairly early start as we were on our way at 8:45am. I've said many times before that every time we come to Whitby, we just have to walk to Sandsend and back; a tradition for us in every sense. It was about 3hrs until high tide so whilst the beach wasn't the open expanse that we often see, there was still enough sand on offer to allow us to walk all the way on the beach. After arriving into Sandsend we stopped off at the cafe for a Hot Chocolate and a Mocha. Not that it was cold enough to need them, in fact we were able to sit outside and not have to bother with a coat.

We continued along the front, and although unplanned we decided to head inland and walk around the Woodland of the Mulgrave estate - lots of autumn colours still hanging on in there and relatively quiet which we like.

As it was later than expected due to our additional section of the walk, we were getting a little peckish so headed to the same cafe again, sat outside again, no coats again, and had a nice light lunch. I had to have 'afters' though and had a large piece of Rocky Road, which was nice but to be honest I have had much better and it was a tad sickly.

As the sea was much further in we knew we wouldn't be able to make it all of the way back along the beach so took the path along the side of the main road past the golf course, then dropped down the path that cuts the course in half, and then up the hill and along the front but on the top with great views out to sea. We had to do a bit of a detour as Donna had ordered a couple of items from Amazon, so after collecting them from the Post Office we were back in the apartment by 3:30pm and ready to put our feet up after what had turned out to be an 11 mile walk.

And tonight, fireworks over Whitby as part of the celebrations so around 6:45pm we headed back down into the town. We knew that the fireworks were due to start at 7:45pm, however no matter where we looked we couldn't find where. Donna even phoned Tourist Information and they didn't know! Therefore we simply walked around town and found a council official who told us where they were, so we set up next to the harbourside and enjoyed the display. A walk around the old town before heading back to the apartment, arriving back a little after 9pm.
