Where is the Water? - 27th October 2018

Iceland seems such a fading memory now, over a week since we returned and it just seems so long ago. However, back in the beautiful UK and as always lots of places to go.

Looking at the forecast for today it suggested early clear skies, followed mid-morning by cloud coming in from the east. So an early start was the order of the day if we wanted to make the most of the better weather. We left the house a little before 7am and by 7:40am (no traffic) we were parked close to the bridge at Ashopton on the A57; the bridge that crosses the bottom of Ladybower Reservoir.

We set off along the eastern path under lovely crisp clear skies, however, the forecast was out by a few hours and it quickly clouded over, in fact it started snowing and that continued on and off the the next few hours. We didn't walk quite as far as we had planned, however the main focus of the walk was to spend some time looking around the remains of the village that was flooded when they made these reservoirs along the Derwent Valley many years ago.

There isn't a great deal left there now, however seeing what is there gives you a great feel for what life must have been like. Great to see this, however not great to see the level of water so low in the reservoir; not something I have seen before. It will be a long time until the levels rise to 'normal', and that's only if we have a wet winter I would suggest.

We got a little damp to say the least on the way back to the car, but after swapping into drier attire we set off into Sheffield for a Waitrose 'big shop'. Then a quick stop off back at home to unpack, and then off to Rotherham for the Titans v Plymouth rugby game. And a win for the Titans, the fifth in a row where they have gained the full 5 points so a big smile on our faces.

And then a cosy night ahead wrapped up at home...
