Iceland 2018 - Part 4

And on to the last part of our 2 weeks in Iceland, the longest drive today, ending in the shortest period here; 2 nights in Hveragerdi about an hour or so from Reykjavik. We left at a little before 7:30am as we were up and ready and might as well make the most of what turned out to be a real mixed back of a day with the weather. Most of the day dry with some sunshine, some of the day very grey and wet. Thankfully though we never actually got wet. By around 9:30am we were passing Jokulsarlon to stopped off for 30 minutes or so just to have a last look, and as luck would have it we managed to see some seals. We continued 10 minutes down the road to Fjallsarlon; a smaller lagoon with a glacier behind it but you get much closer and it was just as impressive as it's bigger brother, especially as it is so quiet in comparison. The Icelandic band Kaleo recorded one of their videos on top of an iceberg in the lagoon so it brings back many memories, and of course Donna had the specific song playing on her phone whilst we were there.
The next major stop on our itinerary for the day was Fjadrargljufur canyon, of course we had many stops along the way including the remains of the bridge that was washed away in a glacial flood and has now become a bit of a tourist attraction with it's brightly painted art. When we arrived at the canyon we spent around an hour there, it is a steady walk up a hill and along the side of the impressive canyon. Made famous as Justin Bieber filmed part of one of his videos there. After crossing the massive flood plain we arrived in Vik, a stop off for a bite to eat sat by it's famous church, and a look around an outdoor outlet. The town has grown so much in the few years since we first went there. Now just the final 2hr section of the journey, by the time we arrived at our accommodation it was 6:30pm, a long long day. And our last full day arrived, we were looking forward to going to the Secret Lagoon today and maybe a trip to the coast, but alas the heavens opened late last night and continued all through today. So we decided to make the 45 minute trip over to Reykjavik.
After parking downtown in the city we wandered around for a while, looking in a few shops, and purchased an Icelandic wool scarf for Donna and a small gift for Jake. We were well covered with waterproofs to keep the rain at bay, so the rain didn't spoil the trip. Before heading back we went for a burger, washed down with the most gorgeous milkshake that we have ever tasted, Caramel flavour and just so creamy. Then, and we decided "who cares" and went to Valdis for a pot of various flavours of ice-cream scoops; divine. All that was left was the drive back, then up early in the morning to head home. What an awesome 2 weeks we have had.
