And so to the last full day of our holiday in beautiful Northumberland; tomorrow is the long drive back south to sunny South Yorkshire and Monday back to work.
This morning I was a bit of a wuss as I had a bad case of indigestion so spent much of the morning moaning about how ill I felt, and filling myself with antacid tablets, drinking milk, sipping warm water and nibbling on dry bread. Not sure if any of it did me any good, but thankfully after a couple of hours I felt ok. And it was good that I did, as today we had a bit of a boat trip planned.
At around 12:30pm we jumped in the car and set off on the 1/2hr drive up the coast to Seahouses. After checking in with Billy Shiels Tours and paying our £28 per person, we waited patiently on the quayside in readiness for jumping onto Glad Tidings XIII and at 1:45pm our adventure began.
We've been to Holy Island on a few occasions in the past and always driven there, and yes today we could have done the same, but the main reason was the fact that we'd be at sea for over 2hrs and there was a chance of seeing Dolphins. A pod of around 30 had been off the coast for a while, and they had been seen again this week. We were also to have 2hrs on Holy Island.
After arriving on the island we took a walk over to the walled garden that sits in isolation amongst the fields of sheep, and it's just a short walk from the castle. We've dropped in to see this each time we've visited, but never before at this time of year and it was looking resplendent.
Our next stop was up in the village for a hot drink and cakes at the Pilgrims Cafe. And here was a first for me; sparrows coming onto the table to pick up scraps and actually eat from your hand. Clearly very used to spending time around humans and not afraid in any way; it was mesmerising.
The journey back saw us go close to a couple of the Farne Islands where we saw many seals popping their heads up out of the water, and thousands of sea birds, particularly Puffins, Terns, Cormorants and Shags. An ornithologists delight. It was just a pity that it was overcast and rather cool, it made for a chilly journey over the waves, but to be honest didn't really spoil the afternoon.
Before heading back to the cottage we picked up some food from an Italian Restaurant in Seahouses and set off back down the coast for our last evening by the sea.
