Cragside - 10th July 2018

Today started with a bit of a tidy round as there was a surveyor coming to the cottage today, we also packed away a few things and popped our valuables in a bag to take in the car with us. Thankfully he/she was coming around mid-day so we made sure that we were out, just leaving the key in the key safe next to the door.

We left a around 10am and headed inland, over to Cragside, a National Trust property that we've visited on a couple of occasions in the past but always love to spend some time there when we're up in Northumberland on holiday. It was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity, but today we wouldn't be going in the house itself, but taking a walk around the estate.

In total there are over 40 miles of tracks around the estate, and it can be challenging in areas because as the name suggests, it is all built on the side of a large area of crags. Heavily wooded so in this warm weather it helps a little to keep you cool, however being about 15 miles from the coast none of the sea breezes that are on offer near the sea,

We walked close to 6 miles, a similar route to the one we walked last time we were here, taking in the lakes at the top of the estate, the timber flume, some smaller tarns, the iron bridge and the formal gardens. You could however see that many of the plants and flowers were struggling with the lack of rain over the last few weeks. A hard job for all the gardeners at the property to keep it looking at it's best.

After just over 4hrs we headed back across to the cottage for a few hours of chilling out before heading out to the beach this evening.

So 7pm arrived and we jumped in the car to head off to Embleton Bay which we'd walked along yesterday and on our hike up the coast. We took a towel, both wore our Crocs, a change of clothing for me as the intention was to have a swim in the cold North Sea. However, the waves were a little too challenging for me so we decided against it; instead choosing to head back down the coast to Boulmer in the hope that it was a little calmer down there. Well, after 20 minutes we arrived and the sea was so far out you could only just make it out beyond the rocks! We gave up.....
