Castle on the Coast - 9th July 2018

After yesterday's heat and humidity we were hoping for a cooler day today, and thankfully our wishes were granted. Much cooler when we awoke this morning, in fact there was a very slight drizzle in the air and it was very overcast so the sun was being kept at bay. Just as the forecast had predicted, so for once the weathermen (and women) were 100% correct.

We fancied a relaxing morning, so YouTube and Netflix were our friends as we settled down on the sofa with our feet up, just recharging our batteries. It's easy when on holiday to feel that you have to be doing something all of the time, when in fact it should be about relaxing. No point in having a holiday then returning home and going back to work feeling like you've not had a break!

So after lunch we readied ourselves for our first walk of the week; an 8 mile round-trip up the coast and back. We parked up in Craster in the main car-park, then headed north along the coast. After a mile or so we passed by Dunstanburgh Castle - no visit there this time but we have been twice before so it's not like we're missing out.

From the castle we had around a 2 mile stretch of the gorgeous Embleton Bay in front of us, one of the finest beaches in the UK. The sea was quite far out so the deep orange flat sands backed by rolling dunes just opened up in front of us. At the end of the bay we stopped off at the inn at Low Newton for a cider and crisps. The inn there is part of the square of fishermen's cottages; one of only two left in the UK so lots of history attached to it.

On the return route we spent the first mile or so on St Oswalds Way, set behind the dunes but running parallel to the beach. But, as we were protected from the sea breeze we couldn't wait to get back out onto the beach again to cool down a little. The route back to Craster was far quieter than earlier as we crept into the early evening. And a little after 7:30pm we were back at the car and ready for the short drive back to the cottage.
