On each occasion in the past when we've been on holiday in Northumberland we've stayed at the same place, Alexandra Cottage in Beadnell. And as we've become quite fond of Beadnell it would be good to go and spend a few hours there whilst we're back up here in the county.
We parked in the main car-park just behind the dunes that back onto the bay. It's a long golden stretch of sand; normally very popular with kite-surfers but being the middle of the day, middle of the week, and not that much wind about there were none to be seen today. That said, it wasn't as if there was nobody about as the beach was busier than we've seen it before, and looked even more full as it was close to high tide so space on the sand was a little more limited.
Around this time of the year, about a mile down the bay is an area called Long Nanny, where every summer Arctic Terns come here to nest. And every year the National Trust cordon off an area of the beach and their rangers spend all summer in tents making sure that the colony of Terns is not disturbed. And this year the NT had purchased a new section of beach so the cordoned off area was bigger than normal and the Terns had a larger area in which to build their nests in the sand.
We continued further down the beach but to be honest it was getting really quite warm so after another mile of so we decided to tern back...get it?
Much of the walk back was along St Oswalds way behind the dunes, thankfully there was now a breeze so it wasn't as hot back there as we had expected. After dropping our gear off back at the car we took advantage of the ice-cream van sat near the beach. Amazing though how the actual cones are so much smaller than on the pictures!
So back down the coast to the cottage, we had plans to go back out this evening but we might just decide to put our feet up and relax with a drink, some music and a quiz.
