Monsal Circular - 19th May 2018

I did have to ponder whether to go out today as we've just returned from holiday, and I have a pre-arranged outing already planned for Sunday. However, given the great weather and the fact that I hadn't seen my friend Darrell for a few weeks I couldn't waste the opportunity as we would have so much to chat about, much of which would probably be more aligned to banter than serious conversation. As often is the case.

After dropping Donna off at work I headed out into the Peak District and met with Darrell just outside of Little Longstone; right next to the small church that's just on the edge of the village. We headed off down the lane into the village, then picked up the path in a southerly direction across the fields towards Monsal Trail.

Now the trail is very popular, as are many of these abandoned railway lines that have been converted since being closed down in the 1960's. When walking along it; and it's close to 10 miles long, you are more often than not fighting for space with cyclists. Yes they are just as welcome as walkers, but, they do seem to expect you to move out of the way all of the time which is a little pet hate of mine. And today was much busier as what we weren't aware of was that there was a 'run' taking place up and down the trail, so today it was even busier than normal.

Anyway, after dropping off the trail and down the hill into the stunning small town of Bakewell we made a stop for a bacon sandwich and a coffee to build our energy reserves. I can't remember the name of the cafe but it's well worth a visit as the 'butties' are very large and they give you lots of filling - well worth the money. Even more so when your walking pal is paying

After leaving the town we stopped off at a small wine retailer on the edge of the town for Darrell to pick up some wine, and as I was surprised to see that they also sold spirits I purchased a bottle of Rhubarb Gin for Donna - she likes the odd G&T.

The walked continued through Ashford in the water, through fields and along the trail to Monsal Head where we faced the steep climb back up the hill and then the short walk back to the car. Over 8 miles and some steady ascent so a really enjoyable walk.
