I had hoped to stay in bed this morning after going out stargazing last night and not getting into bed until just before 1am, but all to no avail as I awoke at 6am so shouldn't really complain as it's been 5am most mornings. I actually went out at sunset last night as well as waiting until it was dark; both occasions in the hope of getting some decent photos so fingers crossed for when I load on the photos.
So after yesterday's tiring walk we decided on a bit of a mixed day. We left around 9:30am and headed towards Hexham, hoping to see the Abbey and the Gaol. Unfortunately the Gaol doesn't open on Monday's which was a tad frustrating. however the Abbey was unexpectedly stunning. Loads of history (obviously) with clear references to the Roman's, and the bonus of a visit down into the crypt.
Whilst in Hexham we needed to do some shopping so made a visit to Waitrose before heading back towards Housesteads. Our journey back wasn't direct though as we stopped off for a visit at the amazing 'discovery center' - The Sill. A magnificent modern facility where you can learn all about the land and the skies; it also has a Youth Hostel for those who are looking for affordable accommodation. We spent an hour but you could probably spend double that if you had time.
Back at the cottage was had a late lunch as a result of the time we had been out, in fact not finishing eating until 3:30pm. Then outside for half an hour taking in the sunshine before I got a little hot and bothered so we came back inside to cool down.
We relaxed for a couple of hours then headed out for a walk along Hadrians Wall and back walking for over 2hrs; taking in the sunset whilst we were out and then later some more stargazing. Well when you are this far from the nearest town and it's a clear night outside you simply have to.
