Aching legs so no walks planned for today, instead we went on a bit of a drive to get to our first port of call. As we know from this blog, Donna does like to collect sea glass and she knew that the most famous place in the UK for doing so is the beach at Seaham. So why is it so; well until around 100 years ago the biggest glass factory in Britain was in Seaham and over the years as you can imagine lots of it gets washed up onto the beach.
It was a 100 mile round trip over to the coast so we set off a little after 9am, stopped off in Hexham on route as my belt had fallen apart this morning so we popped into Next for a new one. We arrived just after 11am and were quick to get the beach-combing underway.
We searched the beach for around 90 minutes, and yes we came away with quite a few small pieces of glass, but maybe not the haul that we expected. Enjoyable however just walking up and down the beach thinking of nothing. After eating our sandwiches in the car we set off into the small town itself and after parking up spent some time looking around the marina and harbour, and popped into a lovely cafe called Humbles where we had a cream tea - the main meals looked lovely in there so part of me wished we hadn't already eaten!
The plan wasn't to go straight back to the cottage but to head to Vindolanda the famous Roman ruins which are only a couple of miles from where we are staying next to Housesteads Fort. We arrived around 3pm and surprisingly were there until almost 6pm; it is simply an amazing place.
All of the ruins (plus the active dig) are mindblowing, but if you also take in the museum on the site you can't help but to be stunned at all the artifacts that have been dug up. You just can't believe that many of the items on display are between 1,700 and 2,000 years old. Arguably the highlight of the holiday.
Thankfully only a 5 minute drive back to the cottage, as to be honest by now I was 'knackered'.
