Castleton - 14th April 2018

I was almost suffering from Peak District 'cold turkey'....it was just so long since we'd been out there due to a mix of availability and weather. The snow doesn't half put a stop on getting out and about to those country roads that wind gently between hills and villages.

However, at last today we could get out and about. The weather was set fair so we knew that it was likely to get busy out there, so we made the decision to head out later in the day and have a relaxing morning. We left at around 2:45pm and by 4pm were parked up in the busy village of Castleton. Yes it was VERY busy, but given the time of day and the route we would be taking we didn't expect it to stay that way.

Our route took us out through the back of Castleton and up the valley below Peveril Castle; a fairly rocky path with a constant incline of around a mile. Not that steep though so lots of opportunity to get your legs 'up and running'.

The path took us out into open countryside, it was great to see all the new lambs in the fields surrounding us, a great sight for Springtime. We then headed over in the direction of Mam Tor and could see all the Paragliders rising in the thermals above Rushup Edge; always a sign of good weather.

We sat and had our sandwiches before heading down the old collapsed road and then back into Castleton which was now much quieter, apart from the usual Saturday night visitors who take advantage of the quaint pubs and restaurants in the village. We left at 8pm and headed off back along the now quiet roads; a really enjoyable 4hr walk in the hills.
