Well it's been a couple of weeks since I started my new job, so working Mon-Fri is just starting to hit home as I haven't worked that pattern for many years now. I won't deny that I prefer working a mixed shift to get the days off in the week, but now just a memory.
The winter weather had been fairly tough the last few weeks and we didn't want to risk getting stuck out on the snowy roads in the Peak District; too much risk going all that way only having to turn back. So, a great local walk along the Chesterfield Canal would get us out in the fresh air.
It's only a 15 minute drive down to Kiveton Park train station where we can pick up the canal walk and not have to worry about finding somewhere to park. We've always walked eastwards, but always wondered whether there was much to see heading the opposite direction. So we took that path, and always good to investigate, but we did have to turn back about 1/2 mile down the track as it goes underground for a good few miles.
About turn then, and head back past the station and along the path we have trodden a number of times before. It was a lovely walk with the frozen canal often snow covered, large icicles hanging from the bridge, and watching the ducks, geese and swans all converging around the breaks in the ice.
So a lovely few miles walking, and proving that you don't have to go far to enjoy your walk.
