Kinder Plateau - 4th February 2018

Just myself and Malc from our 'Sunday club' today, Colin was away with work in Portugal, and neither Mel or her mum Dianne were available.

I had a bit of a 'tester' planned for today, a walk that would certainly get our blood pumping and burn up a fair number of calories. We headed out into the Peaks and parked in the main car-park in Edale village around 10am; and to say it was busy would be an understatement. That said, nice weather planned with no rain forecast so to be expected I guess.

Now a few years ago when in training for Ben Nevis I went up onto Kinder by myself, and via Grindsbrook Clough which is one of the more difficult routes up as the last 1/2 mile or so is rocky and no real path, so clambering over the rocks and through the small stream is very tiring. So today, with snow and ice it was absolutely knackering!

From leaving the car is was about an hour and a quarter before we reached the top of the clough and saw Edale below us and a very snowy Kinder laid out before us. Walking up here was rather difficult as the main paths were compacted snow and very slippy, and they were surrounded by deep snow, often sitting atop deep sloppy peat bogs. Not great when your boot sunk through the snow and came out a deep dark brown.

However, it was a stunning walk. Ok I fell down twice in the space of about 5 minutes, but I soldiered on without moaning too much. For a change the route took us back down Jacobs Ladder which was also icy, then back across the fields to Edale and they were thick with mud. But, lovely weather apart from the shortish snow shower as we arrived on top of Kinder.

We had walked for four and a half hours, nearly 9 miles and 2,500ft of ascent so we can be rather proud of ourselves.
