Well another year passes by, and one of the more frustrating years given that I took unemployment in June and spent the second half of the year deciding what I would like to do for the last 10+ years of my working life. One thing however that is unlikely to change in the near future is our love of walking, and my snaps taking along the route.
We went to a party on the 30th, then out for a curry on the 31st, however we were home and tucked up with a hot drink and 'goodies' whilst the clock ticked into 2018, all in readiness for our walk on New Years Day. Like many we always like to get out in the fresh air on the first day of a new year.
Our walks have taken us around sections of the reservoirs of Ladybower, Derwent and Howden on many occasions, but as a couple myself and Donna had not walked around Derwent and Howden so decided to do so today. So after leaving home around 6:30am we were parked up at the top of Ladybower and set off walking around 7:40am. As forecast it was dry with some clear breaks in the sky but no sun yet as we were still 30 minutes from sunrise.
It's a steady walk around the reservoirs, it rises slowly as you head along the side of Derwent and up around Howden as they all feed into each other with Ladybower the last of the three, so nothing too steep or testing for an early morning walk. After stopping at the packhorse bridge at Slippery Stones for some homemade soup it was time to start heading back down the eastern flanks of the reservoirs.
As we got further down towards Ladybower it reminded us why we like to get out early to areas like this as it was getting really busy, particularly with mountain bikers who seem to think that they own the paths, always expecting walkers to get out of their way. However, great to see so many people out getting some exercise.
As the reservoirs were overflowing the dam walls it gives added interest to the walk, and is the reason many people come out here in the winter - a sight to see if ever there was one. By the time we arrived back at the car we had walked a little over 11 miles and been nearly five and a half hours on our feet. So back home for a well deserved rest.
