On many an occasions in the past I've read about the B29 bomber crash site out in the Peak District, but it's never been something that I have even had in the back of my mind when planning a hike. But, a few days ago Donna had seen a Facebook post about the site and mentioned it to me, so we checked out the history behind it and decided that a hike out there was a must. The site is up on Bleaklow so nearer Glossop than Sheffield, and out on the hills half way between the Snake and Woodhead Pass'.
So as the weather had looked fairly good for today, and therefore a good sunrise might be the order of the day, in my mind I had an early start. Maybe not so early to enable us to get to the site for sunrise as that would have meant too much walking by torchlight in an area we weren't familiar with, so if we could grab the sunrise at some point it would be good.
However, something else cropped up so we would have to change our plans to a middle of the day walk which was probably a good option as we would then have daylight for all of the walk which is maybe better when it's somewhere you haven't walked before. Safety first and all that.
On our way across we had a 10 minute stop off on the bridge at Ladybower Reservoir as there was fog lingering over the bottom end of the reservoir, not wall to wall fog but it was fighting for it's life before fading away. Funnily enough it was the exact situation we had looked for when we came out for sunrise a few weeks ago, but then to no avail.
Anyway, we continued on our way for another 20 minutes or so until arriving at the small parking area next to the A57 from where we would set off on our hike. Well we set off ok, but after around 20 or so minutes we decided that the very boggy ground was not providing us with the most enjoyable surface on which to walk so we turned back. Plus it had started to rain a little.
It was now a case of what to do, head back or look for somewhere else. And as we would be passing Ladybower again on the way back we decided to park up, eat our lunch and then have a walk around the bottom end of the reservoir which we did for over 2hrs! Still lots of autumn colour abound so a really enjoyable short adventure.
By around 2:15 we had arrived back at the car, heading back into Sheffield to do some food shopping at Waitrose then out to Crystal Peaks to pick up some bits. Home by around 5pm, a mixed day but a really enjoyable one.
