Donna was working today so my original plan was to head out to the Peak District after dropping her off as the forecast was for a gorgeous sunny morning and therefore a lovely sunrise over them there hills.
However, on Sunday I messaged Malc as on our previous walk he had mentioned flying his drone over the small waterfall near Roche Abbey. So we planned a walk that would take in that historic destination. Malc however suggested a later start as he'd been working the weekend. All good.
However on Monday morning around 9:30 Malc messaged me saying suggesting a 'rain check' as he was tired after the weekend, so I had to find something else to pass the time. I considered doing the walk myself but decided to save that for another day, and as it was too late now to go far I pulled out the OS map looking for somewhere local.
And as soon as I looked at the map it was like a light being swtiched on; what about Anston Stones? About 10 minutes from home, and although I've lived in the area half of my life I've never been. So decision made.
Now for the first 15 minutes or so I was so underwhelmed, it was just overgrown paths lacking anything remotely like autumn colours, in fact I almost turned back. However I'd bumped into an older couple who persuaded me not to give up, and in the end it was all worth it.
I was actually there for 3hrs, I walked 4 miles and the colours further down the stream we stunning - there was so much to photograph that I could have stayed there until the sun went down. But of course I didn't. So a moral in the story I think, if at first you don't succeed....
