My reference to 'two halves' relates to the fact that in the morning it was raining so we had a relaxing few hours around the cottage, however it could actually be split into three sections.
We had an early'ish lunch and left the cottage around 12:30pm. A morning of Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier and Jeremy Kyle with a little reading mixed in had refreshed our batteries. Our route took us up the eastern edge of the island right to the tip of Penmon Point, with it's great views across to Puffin Island and the Great Orme across the sea.
After 15 minutes of so taking in the fresh air, plus a cream tea at the cafe, we set off on our 6 mile circular walk. We headed west along the IOA Coastal Path, that said it wasn't exactly on the coast just near it; ok you could see the sea in the distance. As with all the walks we'd been on this week, it was all very well signposted. After coming off the path and heading down into Llangoed much of the walking was along small country lanes so lots of jumping into the hedges every time a car approached.
We passed though Llangoed and headed towards our target of Castell Aberlleiniog, a well preserved Mott & Bailey castle between the village and the coast. We were quite surprised that there are still the walls in place and some of the turrets of this small castle - well worth seeking out.
The next part of the walk is quite surprising as you again pick up the coastal path, but the path is all lanes so apart from a brief venture onto the beach you have tarmac underfoot. Lots of see on this path though as you head back to Penmon Point. Remains of a priory, a large dovecote, a very historic church and an old holy well.
It wasn't our first visit to this area, but the last time the church wasn't open so it was good to go inside, and we were amazed at some of the very old artefacts adorning the walls and floor of the church. Of course we had a chat with the guy that collects the £3 toll to park out on Penmon Point, this time however he did have something worthwhile to say - there was an air-ambulance out on the point and the lane was closed!
We continued along the lane, but thankfully before we reached the incident we were able to take a short diversion onto the path we came along earlier to get back to the car. We believe that the incident wasn't as serious as first thought so all well in the end.
Now when I say this could have been divided into three sections, well after finishing our walk we spent well over 2hrs waiting for sunset, I got some great photos and Donna did her 'Rachel Mears' and kept spotting Porpoises swimming off the point which is amazing to see. Thankfully we managed to get them on video, albeit a little distant.
So another late day out, back to the cottage around 8:30pm, tired but a really enjoyable afternoon and evening.
