Change in the Weather - 20th September 2017

We've been very fortunate so far with the weather, three full days around the island with no weather related restrictions, plus our travel day so we can't complain. A bit of a change however today so we made plans for a few places to visit, with the option of cutting it short if the weather came back to test us.

Our first port of call was Barclodiad y Gawres over near Rhosneigr, a Neolithic burial chamber. On arrival we missed the main car-park so decided to stop in the one we pulled into to turn around, and walk to the chamber. You could see it in the distance and it looked close, however the path took us along the beach and around the small headland; it was actually 1 mile each way.

And to be honest we were glad that we'd visited it, but it was a little disappointing. Due to recent vandalism (yes I did say that), the interior is now by appointment only and has a large metal gate across the main chamber. And with no lighting inside it's hard to make out the stones, and difficult to take photos as you couldn't quite get the camera through the bars in the gate. Hard to believe though that these stones were all placed around 5,000 years ago.

After walking back to the car, and getting rather wet for the last 5 minutes or so we headed into Rhosneigr hoping to be able to sit looking out to sea with our sandwiches. Unfortunately though, although it has an award winning beach, there is no actual sea-front so nowhere to park and take in the views! A bit of a letdown.

It was about a 30 minute drive north to our next port of call, Melin Lynnon which is the only working windmill in Wales. It was certainly worth the £3.80 per adult entrance fee; you could view the three floors of the windmill itself by climbing up the steep stairs, there are two roundhouses showing how Iron Age life was around 3,000 years ago, and the old bakery which whilst now a ruin does give you a sense of what it would have been like to work in there in years gone by.

It was now around 2:30pm, and getting very wet and windy so we decided to cut short our day out and head back across the island to the cottage. We'd had a couple of long days so it wasn't really an issue. We'd hoped to manage a stroll along the pebbled beach early evening, but the weather didn't abate so a night chilling out would do us just nice.
