Well it's been a good few years since we went 3 months without a holiday, ok we've been quite fortunate so we shouldn't complain but it does seem so long. I need to get a job soon just so we can get some more booked!
Last year we had a week in Anglesey and really enjoyed it, so earlier this year (when still employed of course) we booked another week but in a different part of the island. Last time around it was Red Wharf Bay, this time a nice cottage in the south-east corner of the island and only 300m from the Menai Strait.
In the past when our holidays in the UK have been Friday to Friday we've wished they weren't as it means taking an extra day off work, but oh my good it's preferable to having to travel on a Saturday when the roads are busy. It was a slow drive over, total driving not far off 4hrs!
The cottage wasn't accessible until 4pm as is often the case, so we needed to pass some time on our way over. We waited until we were close to our destination so decided to have lunch on the pier at Bangor and pass an hour, then make a visit to Penrhyn Castle on the edge of Bangor for a couple of hours.
What we hadn't thought about was that it is the time of year when teenagers head off to university, and what does Bangor have; yes a university, so getting into the town was a nightmare. Cars stuffed to the rafters with housewares queueing up to enter the town, nose to tail. But hey, we're on holiday so do we really care?
Well the pier was well worth the wait, it provided a stunning location on which to have our lunch. Very well looked after, quite ornate, and a beautiful location reaching out well into the Menai Strait. After an hour or so we headed out of the town to the outskirts where we ventured to Penrhyn Castle.
Well wow, an absolutely fantastic place. Far bigger than we expected, stunning architecture and a beautiful interior. It's a site where you could spend a day if you had time to take in the gardens and the walks around the estate. However, we needed to continue on our journey.
Our last stop was to do some shopping at Waitrose in the town of Menai Bridge, it was packed and to be honest I was getting more and more frustrated as we meandered around the store. Thankfully be 4:30pm we had done, and now just the 15 minute drive to the cottage.
