Wednesday is the day when Donna and her mum sometimes go walking together, a time for exercise, to enjoy the fresh air and catch up with each other. And as I'm still amongst the ranks of the 'temporary available' I would tag along - well a chauffeur is required after all.
Often the walks are on the flat, but as we took Dylse once before around Longshaw I decided that we would again head out into Derbyshire and I planned what I expected to be a comfortable walk from Burbage Bridge, up to Higger Tor then drop down to the Sheffield Country Walk and back along under Burbage Rocks.
Now Dylse is 79 years old, and has had both knees replaced so whilst she is still very fit for her age, maybe I hadn't chosen wisely. No major issues for the first mile or so, yes it was a challenge for her getting up to Higger Tor as there's some incline and some sections of the path are quite rocky. Well worth the climb though for the views, that said, it was very grey today so you couldn't soak in the full beauty of the purple and pink swathes of Heather.
But here came the problem. I hadn't realised that the main path down from Higger Tor was steep and rocky, yes I'd been down from the Tor on a number of occasions but just climbed down anywhere on the rocks and hadn't actually tried the main path. And it was simply too much to expect so we looped around the small plateau and took a slightly different route back to Burbage Bridge where we set down for an early lunch.
After enjoying the lovely sandwiches, pork pie, tomatoes and plums that Dylse had packed up for us, we decided to walk so far down the Sheffield Country Walk, enjoy watching some of the climbers on the rocks and then turn around and come back. By doing this we added an extra mile or so on the walk.
Ok the scenery would have looked much better had we seen the sun bringing all the colour out in the Heather, but we were fortunate enough not to see rain - in fact just as we got back to the car we felt a few spots of rain so our timing couldn't have been much better. An enjoyable few hours, and a massive well done to Dylse; "girl done good" as they say.
