A great little outing today for a fantastic local charity, Rotherham Hospice's Summer Baa-La event down at Herringthorpe Stadium. And, very fortunate that after lots of rain and waking up to it this morning, that it was a glorious afternoon.
There was a good turn-out, lots of stalls and things to do, supported well by the local folk and plenty to see. The highlight however (a clue in the name) was the sheep racing. The guy who did it brought along six of his finest sheep from high up in the Lake District, and either two or 3, I can't remember, of his 'finest' collie dogs. That said, they didn't seem to be that obedient, and after one circle of the track one of the dogs went for one of the sheep!
We also had tug-o-war, adult teams and kids teams, and egg and spoon races, also for the old 'uns and young 'uns. And for those who are quackers amongst us, duck herding. One of the stalls had some birds of prey which were stunning beasts, and Donna even handled one of them - such a brave girl
The last sheep race however turned out to be a little slapstick as two of the sheep escaped the main area and went off around the stadium grounds, it took about 10 minutes for the handlers and the collies to round them up. So funny.
So overall a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
