May Beck Walk - 15th June 2017

For the second consecutive day we had to change our plans, not as significant a change as yesterday but one that would leave us with rumbling tummies!

All started well, we parked up at the car-park at Old May Beck and we had two choices depending on which way round we did the walk. We could either head along May Beck to Falling Foss where we intended to have lunch - the main reason for choosing this walk, but that would mean eating around mid-day, or we could go the opposite direction and eat around 2pm to 2:30pm, we chose the latter option.

We headed south up through Newton House Plantation then looped around to John Bond's Sheep House where we took a seat for a drink. It was another sunny day, but with the stronger breeze it felt much better than yesterday. The next section took us out of the wooded area and up onto the moor, and we took a slight diversion to look at what was shown on the OS Map as 'standing stones'. However, when we reached the point, there was nothing there to see so no idea of their exact position, if still there at all. A bit of a bonus though as we walked over the moor when a Spitfire flew over us, well worth the walk in itself.

So we headed back along the path to pick up the main trail and continued along Shooting House Rigg then turned left and over to New May back then along the top edge of the woods over towards Newton Farm; and this is where we hit a bit of a problem.

As we came to the last field before we picked up the lane to Falling Foss, there was a large herd of cows. When we entered the field they all made a sprint up the field, and as we moved slowly into the field they started trotting over in our direction. No matter how much noise we made they continued towards us, so we turned in haste, pulled the open gate shut and turned back.

Now our only route back was the way we had just walked, so it added a mile or so onto our walk. And as it was likely that by picking up another path to Falling Foss would mean us not arriving there until around 3pm we decided not to bother as the choice of food would be limited at that time. But, we had covered close to 6 miles and around 1,000ft of ascent so at least on the fitness front we had achieved our goal. So back to the cottage for a well deserved ham sandwich, a few hours rest and then maybe a little walk this evening.
