Well our last full day of 10 days in Iceland, tomorrow we will be up around 4am and not that much later off to the airport for the flight back home. It was wet and windy again as it has been for quite a bit of the holiday, but it didn't spoil our time here; in fact nothing spoilt it. Oh, I lied, none of the volcanoes on the island went off stranding us here!
For our last day we decided not to go too far so headed down to Grindavik on the south coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula, a lovely area where we had gorgeous soup on our first visit here, today though we had another packed lunch as we have done all holiday and is highly recommended.
The route across fulfilled one of the hopes I had after our first visit, to see the racks of drying fish, we didn't stop last time but wished we had done, at least I wished it, so this time the customary photos were taken after pulling off the main road whilst Donna stayed in the car as it wasn't really her cup of tea.
Although we had been to the Seltun geothermal area on our first time on the island, we headed down that way for a stop; and the memories soon came back as soon as we met the sulphur smell as we got close to the area. On the drive through the hills we also stopped off to take a few photos of the stunningly blue lake Kleifarvatn, looking beautiful under these grey damp conditions so we can only imagine about how blue it must look under clear skies.
We continued on to Grindavik and out onto the peninsula which was the main reason for the visit, another lovely orange lighthouse (they do like orange ones over here) where we stopped and had our lunch, and remains of the many ships that have crashed off this shore in rough seas. We could only imagine how rough these waters could get as the waves were raging in today and that looked scary enough.
On our way back to Reykjavik we stopped off for a quick look at the apartments in Hafnarfjordur where Jake and his friends are staying in October, an area of modern apartment blocks right next to the bay - a lovely place to stay with great views.
Soon we were back in Reykjavik, and after a cuppa went out and did a little shopping, then our first non-homemade meal of the holiday, a medium pizza each....so nice. Now just the packing to finish and then chill out until bed time. Goodbye Iceland, see you soon we hope.
