Back to Civilisation - 30th April

Well after 7 days of peace and quiet it's back to the hustle and bustle of city life in Reykjavik, well as a base anyway. It's been a great week up on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, the weather could have been better but could also have been a lot worse so we will take it as a win. The drive back down was around 250 miles inclusive of a detour inland, so we stocked up with water and sandwiches for the journey, and of course a chocolate bar each; well you just have to don't you when on holiday?
The route back down was the same as we came up a week ago along the south of the peninsula down to Borgarnes, but at that point we headed inland to an area we hadn't been to before. After around an hour we arrived at one of our stop-off points, the waterfall at Hraunfossar where the waterfall is actually streams of water filtering out through the lava into the river, and a smaller torrent at Barnafoss; both within a couple of hundred metres of each other and both stunning in their own ways. Our arrival however coincided with loads of tourists on buses from Reykjavik so it was a little like Pacman moving around the site; we did though stay until after they had left to have free reign to the site - it was well worth the visit.
We then took a slight unplanned detour up past Husafell where we found a beautiful spot to have lunch, the the view of Langjokull ice-cap in the distance, and a range of Rhyolite mountains in front of us. Such a peaceful lunchstop. After about 30 minutes we turned around and headed down to the thermal springs at Deildartunguhver, where the worlds most powerful hot water spring sits underground and feeds water many miles down to some of the towns on the coast through a network of massive pipes. The only way you know of it's power is the small area where the water bubbles up through the rocks. We also saw this chubby and hairy Collie type dog that just sits in the car-park waiting for visitors to fuss it, an extremely friendly ball of hair he was.
And that was it for our stops, we had nearly 2hrs of driving back down to Reykjavik, where we arrived at 4:30pm after a short stop at Bonus supermarket in Mossfellsbaer just outside the city. And although by UK standards the traffic wasn't too bad, after where we had been it just seemed so busy. We unpacked and made some tea, then at 7pm headed out for an hour and a half walk around the city to get a little fresh air, then headed back to the apartment thankfully timing it well as the heavy rain just arrived.
