Monsal Meander - 8th April 2017

Walk: 8:30am to 12:30pm, 8.8 miles and 1,250ft of ascent

Unusually for Donna she was working on a Saturday, unusual but it worked out ok as she's swapped a day and now has the Thursday off before we go to Iceland. And of course the forecast was for a gorgeous day so what better to do than head out into the Peak District.

Now my good friend Darrell isn't able to come walking with us on our Sunday walks, but is free for Saturday's so I had dropped a hint last week that I would be free this week, hoping that he might pick up on it; but he didn't. So to cut a long story short, he was free with nothing to do, we were walking in his favourite area but he wasn't with us. I should have just told him instead of trying to be smart with the hint.

Colin wasn't free this week, so just myself and Malc off out in the sun. My original plan was to head up north of Sheffield out to Langsett and the surrounding moors, but as we weren't picking Colin up there was no reason to head northwards. so I planned a route down near the beauty spot that is Monsal.

Now I've been down walking around this area many times, Malc doesn't recall it so new to him, but as always the route planned was different to the others; apart from the last mile or so when we would be sharing the Monsal Trail with loads of people. It is so popular with families and the like as the trail is an old railway line, so is very flat and therefore easy walking, and particularly for cycling. It is a little pet hate of mine when on trails shared with cyclists that there is always an expectation that you will move out of their way, as if they have priority - which they don't as it's simply a route for all.

Anyway, I digress. We parked at Monsal Head then headed down into Monsal Dale where we followed the river down to where it meets the main road. We crossed the road then headed up hill across the fields to Taddington, a lovely quaint Peaks village. The next section of the route saw us cross the road we had done earlier and cross over through stunning countryside, past Priestcliffe Ditch and then down into Millers Dale where we picked up the trail.

The rest of the walk, about an hour or so, was along the busy trail which as it was now late morning had become very busy, so after a short stop for lunch we were soon back below Monsal Head, having passed through two tunnels as we traversed the trail. Now just the steep climb back up out of the dale, which to be honest really took it out of me, then back across Sheffield returning home at 2pm - a brilliant walk and apart from the last hour on the Monsal Trail. we hardly saw anyone.
