Today was a real mixed bag of weather, but Icelanders are completely used to it the hardy souls. We had rain, sleet, snow, freezing winds, blue sky, sun, and even a rainbow to top it off.
We'd expected the weather to be less than ideal today based on a number of forecasts that we'd been following, and they didn't disappoint; well they did disappoint, you know what I mean. We awoke to rain, then more rain came, and then sleet and wind. And it stayed that way until around 2pm so we had an early lunch, Donna cooked a chicken and some oven cooked potatoes in skins...mmmm. Now time to make the most of a break in the weather.
So we planned a bit of a tour around part of the peninsula, well actually it was more than a 'bit', it was a 70 or so mile circular route. Our first port of call was the famous Kirkuell and it's sister waterfall, both just outside the town of Grundarfordur. We came here last year but the waterfalls were almost completely frozen then, so a much different feel this time around and thankfully whilst we were not alone, it wasn't as busy as we expected.
We probably spent about 45 minutes here, much more than the 10 or so minutes that was the order of the day for the coach party that stopped off; is there really much point in having such short visits to the stand out sites in the area when you have travelled all the way from Reykjavik? Anyway, one thing we didn't do last year was have a look around the small town of Grundarfordur, so we popped into a cafe for a couple of hot drinks, then had a walk up to the church standing proud over the conurbation, then down to the harbour for a look around the port. A lovely little town with some old rough looking buildings, but a lot or very modern looking ones with sleek lines and more muted colours than is tradition.
Now we had planned much more for the day, but the weather had really come back hard from over the hills and we decided that there was little point in continuing as we would end up with wasted visits to the stops that we had on our itinerary - save them for a finer day we said.
So we turned around and headed back west along the coastal road, and of course half way home the weather started to break again so maybe we could have continued? Well no, as not that much later it returned bringing more sleet and snow so being locked up in the warm was far more appealing.
