Rufford Abbey CountryPark - 8th March 2017

Normally mid-week (ok not every week) Donna's mum picks Donna up and they head off for a walk around Clumber Park for a few hours. However this week, as I was also at home, I gatecrashed their walk but we travelled a little further afield and went down to Rufford Park & Abbey. It was January 2014 when we made our last and only visit, and it had been a good few years since Donna's mum had been there.

So although I was gatecrashing their day out, I wouldn't be hanging onto their coat tails walking around the park, but off taking some photos. I took my camera bag and all my gear expecting to get some great photos.

We arrived around 10:30am and Donna and her mum headed off into the distance, and I meandered around the gardens, and then the abbey itself looking for some good shots. It was a little disappointing that the abbey itself wasn't open due to English Heritage doing some work there, but it's such a beautiful set of buildings that there's enough to draw your eye externally. The abbey itself dates back to 1170 AD, but was incorporated into a mansion house in the 17th century.

I tried a couple of new types of photo whilst there, the undercroft to the abbey was open so I took a 30 second exposure with me in it, to give the effect of a ghost deep within the dark underbelly of the abbey, it came out ok showing what appeared to be two Steve Bott ghosts in the photo!

Then, when I met up with my fellow visitors for a chicken sandwich, I set the camera up on the tripod and set about taking photos to create a timelapse. The subject matter wasn't that exciting, just some clouds over the abbey, but when I put it together in the evening it at least gave me a better idea of what it takes to make one.

After finishing off our lunch, I headed off around the lake and took a few more photos before meeting back at the abbey around 2:30pm, then heading back home. So overall an enjoyable few hours, maybe a little rushed but there's always another day.
