Walk: 11:15am to 3:15pm - 6 miles
When we got up this morning it was hard to believe that the weather forecast a couple of days ago was predicting cloud up here, but, it was a gorgeous sunrise with deep red skies and frost on the ground. A perfect January day - especially for walking. It would have been great to have been down on the beach as the sun was rising, camera and tripod in hand, but me and early starts don't get on too well.
Anyway, after a lazy couple of hours we jumped in the car and headed down to Low Newton, which would be the start of our walk today. We've been to Dunstanburgh Castle before in the summer, but it would make a great place for a half-way point in our return walk, and a nice place to take in lunch.
The walk is by no means a taxing one, as 90% of it is along the amazing beaches of Northumberland, passing around Newton Haven and down Embleton Bay, only coming off the beach to take the path up the headland to the castle.
It was perfect walking weather for us for the first half of our walk, beautiful clear skies, and with a cold crisp breeze blowing against us to ensure that we felt all cosy wrapped up in our walking clothes. Warm hat and gloves were definitely the order of the day! The beaches were fairly busy, but not you can't blame people getting out for a walk when it's such lovely weather at the weekend.
By the time we head eaten our sandwiches in the grounds of the castle, it had started to cloud over and sitting there you certainly started to feel the chill in the air. So, as soon as we had finished eating we set off on our return journey.
Not really that much to say on the way back as it was simply a return journey back to Low Newton, an added bonus though as the sea was now further out so we could spend some time walking amongst the rocky outcrops. We arrived back at the car around 3:15pm, and 15 minutes later were walking into the cottage for a cosy evening. A great first day.
