Walk: 10:20am to 5pm - 10 miles
Our initial plan today was to have a steady walk down the beach in Beadnell, however as the weather was absolutely stunning, we went for a longer walk. Our walk took us up the coast through Seahouses, and on to Bamburgh. Then get the bus back to Seahouses to pick up some bread, then walk back down to Beadnell.
I had been up a little earlier than normal (Donna is always up before the postman) so we left the cottage a little earlier today, heading out at a little after 10:15am. We followed the road down to the front and then dropped down onto the beach for the first section of the walk. The tide was at it's highest so we couldn't get that far out, but the pickings were rich for Donna, lots of pieces of glass amongst the pebbles on the beach.
As we reached Seahouses we took the path across the golf course and around the headland and into the small town; packed to the rafters in summer but thankfully much more tranquil this time of year. After heading out of town we stopped amongst the dunes for lunch. Soup and bread, followed by a Blue Riband as an energy treat.
The rest of the walk up to Bamburgh and it's stunning castle was all on the vast open beaches for which this area is famous; and what draws the crowds in the summer. This section of around 3 miles was very relaxing, glorious sunshine, a nice light breeze, and wide open spaces shared with few people.
Our plan was to have a hot drink in Bamburgh, but, surprisingly nowhere was open, not even the pub for a drink. So, after initially thinking that there was no bus for nearly 2hrs, we realised (ok Google informed us) that there was actually one in 10 minutes. It's only around 10 minutes back into Seahouses so less than 20 minutes after getting on the bus we had been to the mini-market and were back walking. We headed out of Seahouses then took the path back down to the beach.
This last few miles were glorious as the colours in the sky were stunning. A glorious pink tinge out to sea, and orange clouds inland looking over to the west. I couldn't stop taking photos along the beach, like a kid in a sweet shop. Donna was still enjoying herself looking for pieces of glass and pottery in the now fading light.
Before heading back to the cottage we detoured down to Beadnell's tiny harbour which I believe is the only west facing harbour on the east coast; fact of the day. A short walk across the beach then over the field and we were back at the cottage. A long but very enjoyable day.
